Coming out or literal translation: out of the closet. It is used at a time when a gay, lesbian or bisexual person choose to be openly for his orientation.
For many people it is not easy to accept that they are attracted to people of the same sex.
On my 14th I started to find guys attractive, but I didn't like that, In that period I thought that what I was feeling did not exist, that I was the only one with those feelings, just because I didn't know the LGBT community. "I can not get on with boys" I thought to myself, and tried to push myself to get more into contact with girls. But that didn't really work. After six years I can fully accept me who I was and still am. I can accept myself by a coming in.
It is often more a focus put on a coming out than on a coming in. But why?
The media always find it interesting to publish coming out stories of famous people. It may help for young people who look up to famous people, but that it is always smeared in the press I find is not entirely correct. People are only human it makes their not more special if they stand out for their orientation. Because heterosexuals do not come out as straight.
In my story, I have never spoken about a coming out. But rather about a coming in what a lot of people don't know. A coming in is: you feel valued within the homosexual community and accept yourself for you are ready to tell it to the outside world. All I think that this is not really should.
Coming in is not evident for many, we are talking about the first encounter with like-minded people. Everyone does this, of course, in his own way and pace. Young people find like-minded people in different ways. One person maybe on social media the other already something more risky by going straight to a Gay party where you can find many gays, lesbians in one place. To me this went quite a while ago through netlog. There I learned for the first time other gay youth. This later grew into my first time to go to a gay party in city of Ghent. And I felt immediately appreciated and accepted by others.
This year, I had also asked to city of Ghent on October 11, to hang the LGBT-flag out on coming-out day for supporting the LGBT- community. They reacted very positive on this proposal.
And they will take this into account in the future and organize something special in the future.
One last message that I find very important is that you must accept yourself and should not be afraid to be yourself. That does not mean necessarily that you have to come out of the cupboard with your family, but you have to learn to accept who you are.
Don't be afraid to be yourself!
